Solid-colour stain and exterior paint look almost identical on the wall — both are opaque, both hide the wood grain, both come in any colour. But on a Vancouver home dealing with 1,200mm of annual rain, salt air off English Bay and hard summer UV, the two products behave very differently over 5–10 years. Here is how we choose between them on Vancouver exterior projects.
What each product actually is
Exterior paint forms a thick film on top of the wood — it sits on the surface, seals it, and blocks moisture in both directions. Solid stain penetrates into the wood fibres and leaves a thinner opaque film on top. Both are 100% acrylic today (oil-based solid stains are effectively gone from the Vancouver market). The critical difference is film thickness: paint is 3–5 mils dry, solid stain is 1–2 mils.
Durability in Vancouver's climate
On vertical siding — Hardie, primed cedar, LP SmartSide — a premium exterior paint like Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Exterior will hold 8–10 years in Vancouver before it needs a full repaint. A premium solid stain (Benjamin Moore Arborcoat Solid, SW WoodScapes) on the same siding will hold 5–7 years. On horizontal wood — decks, fence caps, railing tops — paint fails fast (2–3 years, cracking and peeling from foot traffic and standing water); solid stain wins because it flexes with the wood and does not build a brittle film.
Prep and recoat: stain is easier next time
When exterior paint fails, it peels in sheets — every failed area has to be scraped, sanded to a sound edge, spot-primed, then repainted. Prep on a 10-year Vancouver exterior repaint often runs 60–70% of the labour cost. Solid stain fails by fading and thinning rather than peeling, so the next recoat is usually a wash, light sand, and one fresh coat — much less prep, lower repaint cost. Over a 20-year ownership window, solid stain often costs less in total even though its individual service life is shorter.
Cedar siding: our default is solid stain
Vancouver has a lot of cedar — Kitsilano Craftsman homes, North Vancouver post-and-beams, West Van moderns, older East Van houses. On rough-sawn or resawn cedar we default to solid-colour stain (Arborcoat Solid or SW WoodScapes) because paint traps moisture behind the film and blows off the cedar within 4–5 years. On smooth, previously-painted cedar we stay with paint — you cannot go back to stain once a heavy paint film is on there without full stripping.
Decks, fences and horizontal wood: always stain
We never paint a Vancouver deck. Deck paint looks perfect for one summer and starts peeling by the following February. Solid-colour deck stain (Arborcoat Solid Deck & Siding, Sikkens SRD) is the correct product — it wears rather than peels, so recoat is a clean process instead of a strip-and-restart. Same rule for fence tops, railing caps and any horizontal wood.
Cost per square foot in Vancouver
Materials are close: premium exterior paint runs $95–$115 per gallon at Vancouver-area suppliers; premium solid stain is $75–$95 per gallon. Labour is where the difference shows — a full solid-stain job on cedar siding usually prices 10–15% below the equivalent paint job because prep is lighter and the film build is thinner (fewer back-brushing passes). Over a 20-year window, a cedar home stained twice will cost 25–30% less than the same home painted twice.
How to decide on your own Vancouver home
Rough-sawn or resawn cedar, or any horizontal wood: solid stain. Smooth siding, Hardie, stucco or previously-painted surfaces: exterior paint. Mixed exteriors (paint on siding, stain on deck and fence) are the norm here — we spec both on most Vancouver projects. When in doubt, get a written quote that itemizes prep, product spec and expected service life, and compare on total cost over 15–20 years rather than the initial price alone.
