Metal painting lives or dies on the prep. Loose rust, mill scale and old peeling paint all have to come off before any primer goes down — we use wire wheels, sanders and chemical rust converters depending on the substrate. Galvanized aluminum gets a separate etching primer because nothing else will bite into it. Once the surface is sound, we spec a DTM enamel rated for wet West Coast exposure and back-brush every coat into the texture so paint actually anchors instead of bridging the surface.

Wrought-iron railings on Vancouver heritage homes and 70s walk-up apartments are our most common request. Most have decades of paint layers, surface rust at the welds and joints, and brittle finish around the foot of every baluster where moisture pools. We strip the failing zones, convert any flash rust, prime with a rust-inhibitive metal primer, and spray two coats of an alkyd or urethane-modified DTM that flexes with temperature swings without cracking.

Aluminum gates, garage doors, mailbox posts, downspouts and metal planters all get the same systematic approach — etch, prime, topcoat — with a focus on hidden inside faces and bottom edges where corrosion always starts. Done right, the finish reads as smooth and even as a factory powder coat.
