A proper trim repaint with the right urethane enamel transforms a tired room overnight and stands up for years.
Most trim repaints fail at the joint where trim meets the wall — gaps open up over time and the cut line ends up jagged and bleeding. We caulk every gap with a paintable acrylic, then hand-brush the cut line freehand so it stays sharp without tape. Done by an experienced painter, a freehand cut on baseboards and casing is sharper, faster and more reliable than tape.
Trim takes more abuse than walls so it needs harder paint. We use a urethane-acrylic enamel — Benjamin Moore Advance, Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane, or equivalent — which levels glass-smooth, cures rock-hard, and washes without burnishing. Two full coats over a properly sanded and primed base gives a finish that holds up for a decade.
Crown moulding, wainscoting and chair rail get the same systematic prep. Dark-stained original trim is sanded to break the sheen, then bonding primer goes down before topcoat — paint applied straight onto urethane varnish always chips around the handle of every door within a year. Exterior fascia, eaves and window trim are caulked, primed bare areas, and finished with an exterior-rated 100% acrylic.
