We protect the lawn with drop cloths, mask off any plants and patio surfaces, then spray-and-back-brush the fence so stain or paint penetrates every nook between boards. Both sides are done so the finish lasts equally on the neighbour-facing elevation. Replacement of a few rotted pickets can be added in if needed.
