Vancouver's exterior painting season is shorter than most people think. Between coastal humidity, wind-driven rain, cool overnight temperatures and the 10°C minimum most premium acrylics need to cure properly, there are really only five reliable months to spray a Vancouver exterior — and even inside those months, forecast-watching is part of the job. Here is how we plan the exterior season for our own crews, and what that means for your project.
The prime window: mid-May through mid-September
This is when we schedule 80% of our Vancouver exterior repaints. Daytime temperatures hold in the 18–24°C range, overnight lows stay above 10°C, humidity is manageable, and rain events are shorter and more predictable. If you want your project done in the peak window, book by February or March — our May–September calendar fills up quickly every year.
The shoulder months: April, October and early November
We still paint exteriors during the shoulder season, but we watch the forecast and dew point carefully. Painting in April or October is fine on a run of dry days with overnight temperatures above 10°C. The risk is a wet snap arriving before the topcoat cures — which lifts the finish off the siding and forces a redo. Homeowners booking in the shoulder season save 5–10% but accept a longer completion window.
Winter (December–March): interior season, not exterior
Vancouver averages 20+ rain days a month between November and March, overnight lows regularly drop below 5°C, and coastal humidity stays above 80%. Painting an exterior during these months is a warranty risk we do not take. Winter is when we focus on interiors, cabinets, condos and commercial work — all of which can be scheduled year-round.
Neighbourhood microclimates matter
The North Shore (North Vancouver, West Vancouver) gets 1,800mm of rain a year — 50% more than downtown Vancouver — and stays wet longer into spring. Burke Mountain, Westwood Plateau and other higher-elevation Coquitlam neighbourhoods lose a couple of weeks off each end of the season. Richmond and the delta run drier but salt air is a factor. We adjust the scheduling window for each specific neighbourhood.
Why timing changes the price you pay
Booking a Vancouver exterior repaint in February or March for a May start typically saves you 10–15% versus calling in July for immediate work. Peak-season labour is the most expensive labour we sell. Off-peak interior and cabinet work is also priced softer — January through March is one of the cheapest times of year to repaint a condo or refinish kitchen cabinets in Vancouver.
